A Mechanical Survey Inspection is a specialized evaluation focused on the
mechanical, electrical, and propulsion systems of a vessel. This inspection is designed
to verify that the engines and associated systems are functioning safely and efficiently.
Performed by a qualified Marine Surveyor, the Mechanical Survey provides valuable
insight into the health and maintenance status of your vessel’s critical operating
components. It can be conducted as part of a Pre-Purchase or Condition & Valuation
Survey, or as a Stand-Alone Inspection for owners seeking an independent
mechanical assessment.
What’s Included in a Mechanical Survey
During the inspection, the surveyor performs a detailed visual and functional
examination of the vessel’s mechanical systems, focusing on identifying wear, damage,
corrosion, or operational deficiencies that could impact reliability or safety.
The inspection typically includes:

  1. Engine Compartment & Bilge Area
o Visual check for water integrity and signs of leaks or corrosion.
o Inspection and testing of bilge pumps (manual and automatic operation).
  2. Main Engines
o Visual inspection for oil leaks, worn gaskets, loose fittings, and engine mount
    wear.
o Evaluation of hoses, cables, clamps, and electrical components for condition
    and security.
  3. Oil & Coolant Testing
o Oil samples may be taken and sent to a certified laboratory for analysis
o Coolant condition tested for optimal values of nitrate, glycol, and pH balance
    (when applicable).
  4. Drive Belts, Sensors, Battery & Electrical Systems
o Inspection of belt tension, wear, and alignment.
o Testing of engine gauges, senders, and sensors for functionality and
    accuracy.
o Full inspection of batteries and connections, including load testing to verify
    capacity and charge condition.
o Examination of shore power system for potential leaking current in
    compliance with new safety regulations.
  5. Engine Room Components
o Validation of trim tabs, battery charger, potable water pumps, water maker,
generators, all AC and DC system and steering components for proper
    operation.
